Biography

What the hell is Psychetronic Dub & Soul?

It's Trip-Pop. It's Dub rhythms woven among Industrial, Electronica and Techno beats. It's Soul and R&B melodies played in Funky Rock arrangements. It's Improv instrumentalism traveling deftly through Trance, Jam and Acid Jazz. It's music at once unique and accessible. It's what we do. We're Blue Marble Beat.

Ours is a modern show capturing the old and the new. It's our original songs and music by other artists presented in our own multimedia-rich, edgy style. We've shared stages with Burning Spear, The English Beat's Dave Wakeling, Israel Vibration, Roots Radics, Gran Torino and Mother's Finest.

There's a THUMP to our music that makes you move your feet and shake your ****. Get lost in the space, the sights and the sounds. Get lost in the groove. Blue Marble Beat moves the body, soul and mind.

A master of subterfuge and persuasion, Derek "dB" Brinson (vox, guitar, keys, programming) has enjoyed beverages with Thomas Dolby and Bootsy Collins, although not simultaneously. An affable and engaging musician, dB is part frontman, part court jester and all bad-****. He's been indicted but never convicted.

Brazilian police once detained Theo Boomhauer (drums, percussion, sequencer, programming) while he waited to board a plane at Jobim International Airport in Rio de Janeiro. At the time he was touring with Faith No More. Theo highly recommends the Roppongi district of Tokyo for all your entertainment needs. He plays GMS drums and Zildjian cymbals.

Thomas "Ski" Szypulski (bass, keys, programming) reached No. 4 on the French Pop charts in 1998 and garnered airplay on six of the seven continents. A skilled surfer who's shrugged off a shark bite and lousy waves, Ski fondly recalls his most recent visit to Jamaica. He recommends Newcastle Brown Ale and Guinness Stout.

dB and Ski first discussed a musical collaboration in 1998 while involved in Power Pop trios The Estranged and Leaning Owen. In 2000, Theo and Ski co-founded the Reggae party band Dread34. dB soon joined on keys and vocals.

Throughout the lifetime of Dread34 and into the early days of Blue Marble Beat, dB played with his Acoustic Soul collective cleverly masquerading as a band, the-nerve. Through the years we've endured identity crises, economic and legal crises, wars, plague, famine and pestilence to become locally renowned performers, scenesters, in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle. All of our influences and experiences meld into Blue Marble Beat's unique vibe.

We've played every size and shape of venue across North Carolina — from private parties, bars clubs, theatres to arenas and Alltel Pavillion at Walnut Creek. We've opened shows for international Reggae, Ska, Rock and Funk acts and have enticed deeply rooted wallflowers to groove on the dance floor.

Blue Marble Beat is Psychetronic Dub & Soul — an experience for the ears and eyes. Attend our shows. Become a Marblehead! "Come get some of this!"

Blue Marble Beat. What can I saw about these cats. Eternally grooving, infinitely evolving, always good. Great shows, killer recordings, all around fantastic.
